Material, combined in samhita, it is extremely heterogeneous in character, and chronologically. Along with the relatively late texts that emerged in the new system of ritual, and this included a very early, pre-state inherited from the era and emerged on the basis of the primitive rites. Preservation of these early texts is not the same. Thus, although most of the conspiracy dates back to the Atharvaveda ancient times, they are presented in a later edition Samhita (which, among other things, evidence of their language). On the other hand, no less ancient hymns Rigveda (their creation is mainly attributed to the second half of II millennium BC. E.) Retained mostly its original appearance.
At the heart of ancient poetry, saved the Vedas, is the national anthem. This is the highest and most developed among the song-poetic genres Indo-Aryan literature. Unlike other genres (family and ritual songs, charms, spells) anthem was associated with the cult tribal society. That is what put him on a higher level in the hierarchy of genres and gave him a special aura of sacredness. Directly referring to the deity by offering him praise, hymn was intended to awaken the god to acts of vital importance to the tribes'. However, the installation for communication with God has significant impact on the organization of the poetic anthem. The mystery, the attraction to hint, complexity and fragility of expression, the abundance of archaisms and tumors in the same time - all this was to create a tribal audience the impression otherness, the selection, which must be attributed to its representation of a speech, turned to the gods. The ancients were convinced that the gods put these words in the singers, giving them the ability to hear her in moments of high inspiration.
Although the system is an archaic ritual, which was associated with anthemic poetry remains largely unclear, there is an assumption that most of the extant hymns created and performed during the New Year holiday. The purpose of this, cosmogonic at its core, the festival was to encourage the gods against the forces of chaos, intensified at the end of each annual cycle. In a festive ceremony included various ceremonial competition, including competition tribal singers - Rishi. Performance in the competition, obviously the improvisation - so the hymns so often referred to shiver of inspiration, enlightenment of that opens the way of speech. But at the heart of this improvisation, no doubt, lay a well-established methods of ownership composition and a set of traditional verbal formulas.
