Poetry.
Buddhist canonical poetry was formed at the intersection of two traditions - the priestly, penetrating to the Buddhist environment, together with alternating Buddhism, and folk. The influence of the priestly tradition, especially notable in the canon of ancient poetry, represented mainly in the collection "Suttanipata." The vast majority of works "Suttanipaty" - poetic dialogues. Like discourse, they have been introduced in the context of the tradition: A conversation with the Buddha or any of his students, or with any of the unconverted, mostly Brahmins.
Question-answer form, deliberate for veiling, mysterious matter, as is often palpable in the test setup Sage (Buddha) - suggests that the earliest of these dialogues is linked to its origin from the Vedic brahmodey. As for the folk song tradition (such as ritual and lyrical), then she had a Buddhist poetry throughout its development, but particularly intense, probably at an early stage. In democratic communities layers of religious songs are often created based on the processing of folk or folk traditions of song creation. Hence the prevalence in the canonical poetry of typical folk song events, such as chorus, parallelisms, etc. amebeynost.
The main genres mature Buddhist poetry - instruction (from short to lengthy precepts of poetic sermon), the epic songs hagiographic content (developed episodes from the life of the Buddha and his followers) and lyrical confession related to the themes of disillusionment, withdrawal from the world of spiritual struggle and enlightenment. The formation of confessional poetry was closely associated with the development of the author's identity. It is significant that if poetry "Suttanipaty" completely anonymous, the collections "Theragatha" and "Therigatha" ("Song of Thera"), which absorbed confessional poetic tradition, are decorated as author: Every product they named their creator. Of course, the actual name of the author is often substituted the name here. authority (a famous saint, closest disciple of the Buddha), many names are random, but in itself a variety of these names are indisputable evidence of the awakening of the author's early. Late gathi confession, which may be subsidizing III-II cent. In some cases show features of literary style, sharply in opposition to the songs of ancient poetry semi folklore canon. It is very likely that the confession, filled with Buddhist sentiments, occupied a significant place in the early literary lyrics, formed at the Mauryan court. Its echoes are heard in the work of another great poet of the late antiquity Bhartrihari. |
