Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Police Reforms campaign?
Police Reforms Campaign is a citizens' campaign for systemic changes in the Police and Crime Investigation System in our country. Big words- that simply mean making the police force work better for us. POLICE REFORMS provides the necessary platform and effective tools for citizen participation. Anyone who believes that status quo is not acceptable and change is possible can join the movement..
2. What changes are being sought through Police Reforms campaign?
The campaign seeks to improve the quality of life of the citizens by re-establishing the primacy of the Rule of Law. The root causes of problems faced by the police force- external interference in police functioning, etc- are directly dealt with. The structural design defects in the Police Force are deal with and systemic reforms are proposed to build a competent and professional police force.
3. How is Police Reforms campaign different from other similar campaigns/NGO movements?
Police Reforms Campaign is highly professional and focused in its approach. All the suggestions are backed by intensive research and authentic facts and data. The idea is to plan a campaign based on accurate information and to make sure that it is implemented. All the activities are planned with time-bound goals. Also, the process is deliberative and consultative. Anyone is invited to give his/her ideas and opinions about the campaign or the model which evolves as new ideas come in. The implementation involves a combination of advocacy and grass-root work.
4. How will Police Reforms campaign benefit me as a citizen?
Today the Police Force is focused on serving its political masters, be it through VIP duties or otherwise. The burden of a whole range of disparate duties have ensured that the citizen has ceased to be the center of Police Forces' efforts. The Police Reforms campaign seeks to re-establish the centrality of the citizen to the existence of the police force and removes the negative influences.  It makes it easy for honesty and survival in the police force to be compatible. As a result, the citizens will find it more easy to be law abiding than at present.
5. How will the changes suggested under Police Reforms campaign help curb corruption?
The changes proposed by the Police Reforms Campaign strike at the root causes of corruption in the Police Force. The Independent Oversight Body will keep a check on the abuse and misuse of authority. This will help police personnel comply with the rulebook. All promotions, transfers and appointments will be done by an Independent Supervisory Body, which will remove avenues to pressurize police officials into manipulating criminal investigations. The day to day control of the police force is thus transferred to a body focused on merit and competency.
