The service provided by the
police
The Transparency
International India study also investigated the respondents' opinion about the
service of the police. A vast majority felt that they got an inadequate and low
quality service by the police.

Interesting to note is that
many of the respondents adopted alternate ways of ensuring the service of the
police. According to the study these alternate methods were bribes, influence
and approaching middlemen etc. as stated below.

The study has also listed
nine services for which the respondents had paid bribes. Worth noticing is that
almost half of the respondents paid a bribe to get their First Information
Report (FIR) registered. The FIR is the first step in a police investigation and
has to be filed at the police station to start an investigation.
