Current Scenario> Problems in Police Force> Design defects in Indian Police System> Conclusion

The above discussed structural design defects are the reasons for the low conviction rates in the country today. The conviction rate of criminal offences (IPC-offences) has decreased from 65 percent in 1970s to a mere 40 percent in 2000. It has been indicated that the IPC-conviction rate are as low as 30 percent and approximately two-third of these are admission cases (i.e. the accused admits to the offence without a court hearing). When a charge is contested, tried and convicted in court the true number of conviction rates drops to 10 percent in reality.
